About the Position

Aarhus University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the research project Locally Crafted Empires (LoCiS), led by Professor Rubina Raja at the School of Culture and Society, Faculty of Arts. This project explores local portrait cultures in Western Asia (1st century BCE–5th century CE) and how they reflect regional identities and imperial influences. The fellowship offers a two-year, full-time position (with a possible one-year extension) and provides the opportunity to contribute to an internationally recognised research environment combining archaeology, art history, and cultural studies. The postdoc will engage in research, publications, database development, and academic events while collaborating with experts in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in Classical Archaeology or equivalent qualification
  • Research experience related to ancient Western Asia (100 BCE–500 CE)
  • Proven ability to analyse archaeological and historical sources
  • Excellent English communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with visual or material culture research
  • Working knowledge of French, German, or Italian
  • Strong organisational and collaborative abilities
  • Publication record relevant to the research theme

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct original research on local portrait cultures of Western Asia
  • Contribute to the LoCiS database and project catalogue
  • Publish monographs and academic articles (solo and co-authored)
  • Organise conferences, workshops, and guest lectures
  • Undertake research travel and fieldwork as required
