About the Position
CNRS invites applications for a fully funded Postdoctoral position in geomorphology, focusing on the study of rock art at the Environnement Dynamique et Territoires de la Montagne (EDYTEM) laboratory in Le Bourget du Lac, France. This unique research opportunity centres on reconstructing the morphogenic history of schematic rock art sites in Southern France, integrating interdisciplinary approaches from archaeology, geomorphology, materials science, planetary science, cognitive science, and social anthropology. The position is part of the internationally recognised ANR SCHEMA project, advancing understanding of human occupation, site use, and wall transformations in cliff shelters.
The postdoctoral researcher will work under the supervision of Claudia Defrasne (CNRS Research Fellow, EDYTEM) and join the “Societies and Morphodynamics” team at EDYTEM. The research involves mapping rock walls to reconstruct the morphogenic history of schematic rock art shelters, analysing anthropogenic impacts, and examining changes in accessibility and use. By placing graphic acts within the chronological framework of these sites, the study will contribute to refining both relative and absolute dating methods.
The successful candidate will conduct independent research using advanced 3D mapping, laser scanning/LiDAR, photogrammetry, and geomorphological fieldwork techniques. Access to state-of-the-art facilities and guidance from experienced researchers ensures a productive environment for high-impact publications and professional development.
Applicants must hold a PhD in geomorphology, archaeology, or a related discipline, and demonstrate strong experience in morphogenetic analysis of rock shelters and wall forms. This full-time postdoctoral position is offered for up to two years, starting September 2026, with competitive funding. The appointment provides opportunities for international collaboration, conference participation, and advanced research skill development in applied geomorphology and archaeological rock art studies.
Explore fully funded geomorphology scholarships, PhD, postdoctoral positions, academic research fellowships, and interdisciplinary opportunities in archaeological sciences, supporting global academic careers and research impact.
