About Position/Job

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join the Hildebrand Laboratory at the Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB) in Norwich. This role is part of a prestigious NERC-funded project focusing on the microbial drivers of methane emissions in soils. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of environmental microbiology, metagenomics, and climate science. The selected candidate will join an interdisciplinary team, utilising advanced sequencing platforms and UK’s top HPC infrastructure, helping to achieve the Institute’s mission to improve planetary and human health through microbiome research.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Soil Science, Ecology, Microbiology, or related discipline
  • Strong programming skills (Python, R, C++, Perl, etc.)
  • Experience with metagenomic or metatranscriptomic data
  • Understanding of environmental microbial communities
  • Demonstrated research output

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in supervising junior researchers
  • Grant writing experience
  • Independent project handling
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing systems

Key Responsibilities

  • Process and analyse SIP-enriched metagenomes and metatranscriptomes
  • Develop custom bioinformatic tools and workflows
  • Apply statistical and machine learning methods to microbial community data
  • Collaborate with internal and external research partners
  • Contribute to lab support, outreach, and student mentoring
