About the Position

CNRS invites applications for a funded Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in Arabic and Islamic Studies / History of Islamic Law at the Institut de recherche et d’histoire des textes, located in Aubervilliers, France. This exciting academic opportunity focuses on Mālikī fatwa collections, religious dispensations, and legal flexibility, contributing to international research in Islamic legal history and comparative religious studies.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively within the ANR DispRel research project, while also conducting independent research using manuscript analysis, philological methods, and historical interpretation. Moreover, access to specialised archives, Arabic manuscript collections, and expert supervision ensures a productive environment for high-impact publications and career progression.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Islamic Studies or a related humanities discipline and demonstrate strong experience in Arabic legal texts and historical methodologies. Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD awarded between January 2024 and April 2026
  • Strong ability to analyse Arabic legal sources
  • Expertise in Classical Arabic and Islamic legal terminology
  • Knowledge of historical and philological methodologies

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Arabic manuscript scripts
  • Strong command of English; Spanish is an advantage
  • Background in the intellectual history of the Muslim West
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively
