About Position/Job

NORCE invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral position in Organic Geochemistry of Palaeoenvironments. This opportunity is part of the ERC-funded PIONEER project, which investigates the impact of climatic variability on early Homo sapiens’ behavioural evolution in Africa. The position is based at the Department of Ocean and Environment, a key unit of NORCE’s Climate and Environment Division, and affiliated with the renowned Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. The project offers high international collaboration and potential career advancement into a permanent researcher role.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in Organic Geochemistry, Palaeoclimatology, Earth Sciences, or related
  • Experience in lipid biomarker extraction, GC-MS, and GC-IRMS
  • Strong understanding of leaf wax isotopic systems (δD, δ¹³C)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in African palaeoenvironments or Middle Stone Age archaeology
  • Demonstrated publication record
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams
  • Willingness to travel for fieldwork in Africa

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze and interpret biomarker data (leaf wax isotopes)
  • Conduct fieldwork and lab-based geochemical analyses
  • Collaborate with archaeologists, palaeoclimatologists, and modellers
  • Contribute to international publications and proposal writing
  • Engage in interdisciplinary project development within PIONEER
