About Position/Job

Kiel University’s Cluster of Excellence ROOTS is inviting applications for 5 Postdoctoral Researchers and 9 Doctoral (PhD) Researchers to join its innovative research programme on social, environmental, and cultural connectivity in past societies. These positions, starting on 1 July 2026, are supervised by Prof. Dr. Martin Furholt and provide a unique opportunity to explore long-term human-environment interactions, inequality, technology, and societal well-being. Researchers will benefit from interdisciplinary collaboration across archaeology, life sciences, natural sciences, and humanities, with access to cutting-edge facilities in the upcoming ARCWorlds research building. Projects include fieldwork, archival research, data science applications, and international collaboration, offering early career researchers the chance to contribute to globally significant studies.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Completed relevant Master’s degree (for doctoral positions) or PhD (for postdoctoral positions)
  • Strong academic record and research experience
  • Proficiency in English (all application documents must be in English)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interdisciplinary research experience
  • Experience with fieldwork, data analysis, or archival research
  • Experience in international research collaboration

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent and collaborative research aligned with ROOTS subclusters
  • Contribute to publications, data management, and outreach activities
  • Participate in interdisciplinary workshops and seminars
  • Engage in mentoring and teaching opportunities where appropriate
