About Position/Job
Newcastle University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Archaeology for the Developing a New Framework for Great Wall Archaeological Research project. This fixed-term, part-time position (0.2 FTE for 30 months) is funded through the AHRC Catalyst Programme and involves collaboration with Northwest University, Xi’an, China. The project is part of the wider Wall to Wall initiative linking Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site and the Great Wall of China, aiming to develop a research framework and strategy to guide future archaeological work on the Great Wall. The postholder will assist in research assessment, agenda development, and strategy formulation, working with scholars in the UK and China, participating in workshops, and supporting data management. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a high-profile international collaboration in archaeology and heritage management.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD in archaeology, heritage management, or commensurate experience
- Experience developing and implementing archaeological research plans
- Ability to manage and structure large, complex data sets
- Experience working with Chinese academia and understanding Chinese cultural norms
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with collaborative or interdisciplinary projects
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of an international team
Key Responsibilities
- Assist Chinese colleagues in literature review and Research Assessment of the Great Wall
- Support development of the Research Agenda and Research Strategy
- Provide critical appraisal of emerging project outputs
- Coordinate workshops in Newcastle and Xi’an
- Participate in online project meetings and communications
- Assist Project Lead with reporting and project logistics
