About Position / Job

Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Marine Environmental DNA to join the School of Biological & Environmental Sciences in Liverpool, United Kingdom. This full-time, fixed-term research position is part of the Horizon Europe project “SEA4FUTURE”, led locally by Professor Stefano Mariani. The project brings together 23 institutions across 10 countries and focuses on improving the sustainability of Mediterranean fisheries through cutting-edge biodiversity assessment tools.

The successful candidate will play a central role in Work Package 2, coordinating the generation of biodiversity and interdisciplinary data to assess fisheries impacts. The role combines field sampling, molecular laboratory work, bioinformatics, statistical analysis, and academic publishing, with strong opportunities for international collaboration and outreach. This position aligns with LJMU’s mission as an inclusive civic university, contributing impactful research that supports environmental sustainability and global marine conservation.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in Biological Sciences, Environmental Science, Marine Science, Geosciences, or a closely related field
  • Experience with eDNA metabarcoding or molecular ecological techniques
  • Skills in laboratory-based molecular methods
  • Experience in bioinformatics and statistical data analysis
  • Ability to lead or contribute to peer-reviewed academic publications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with marine or fisheries-related datasets
  • Familiarity with Mediterranean marine ecosystems
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to engage in outreach activities
  • Experience working in international or multi-institutional research projects

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement ambitious eDNA sampling strategies across Mediterranean fisheries
  • Generate eDNA metabarcoding datasets using molecular laboratory techniques
  • Conduct bioinformatics pipelines and statistical analyses
  • Lead and contribute to high-impact scientific publications
  • Coordinate research activities within Work Package 2 of SEA4FUTURE
  • Participate in outreach and engagement activities
  • Collaborate with international partners across Europe
