About the Position
The Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford is offering a Postdoctoral Research Assistant position in Volcanic Petrology as part of the NERC-funded Large Grant project ‘Ex-X’ – Expecting the Unexpected: Understanding ‘dangerous’ volcanic transitions. This two-year fixed-term post, starting in 2025, will join a dynamic interdisciplinary team led by Professor Jenni Barclay (University of Bristol), focusing on the volcanic systems of the Eastern Caribbean.
The successful applicant will conduct quantitative petrological research to understand magma storage conditions and the timescales of magmatic processes during historic and recent eruptions. This will involve analysing existing sample collections and undertaking collaborative fieldwork in the Caribbean to gather new material. The project aims to significantly advance volcanic hazard monitoring and prediction. Based at South Parks Road, Oxford, the post offers the opportunity to contribute to globally impactful geoscience research, while working within an internationally connected and inclusive academic environment.
