About the Position

The University of Tübingen, Faculty of Humanities, Department of Linguistics, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Cognitive Linguistics, Philosophy of Language, Pragmatics, and Logic. This full-time position (E13 TV-L, 100%) is available from January 2026 for a fixed term until June 2029. The selected researcher will join the Collaborative Research Centre “Common Ground: Cognition, Grammar, Communication” (CRC1718), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Michael Franke and Dr. Todd Snider. The project, titled “Probabilistic Reasoning about Common Ground”, explores how humans establish shared understanding in communication through an interdisciplinary lens that merges philosophy, linguistics, and cognitive science. This position offers a stimulating academic environment, training opportunities in probabilistic cognitive modelling, and collaboration with international scholars.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Psychology, Philosophy, or related discipline
  • Near-native proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Strong analytical and conceptual research background
  • Familiarity with literature on common ground and communication

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in formal, computational, or empirical research
  • Skills in statistical data analysis and cognitive modelling
  • Ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent and collaborative research in cognitive and philosophical linguistics
