Postdoctoral Researcher Position in Cultural Studies at Leiden University, Netherlands

About the Position

Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS) is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the project “Re/Presenting Europe – Urban and Hip Hop as Critical Ways of Engaging with European and Dutch Identity and Belonging.” This 20-month role offers an exceptional opportunity to explore how urban and hip hop culture contribute to identity and belonging among diverse communities in Europe. You will take a leading role in creating a community-driven digital archive, developing educational resources, and conducting independent research. Starting in November 2025, this position is ideal for PhD holders passionate about cultural studies, urban arts, and working directly with community partners. Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in Cultural Studies, Media Studies, History, Anthropology, Postcolonial Studies, Dance or Music Studies, or a related field
  • Proactive in co-producing knowledge with community partners
  • Strong ability to work in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with grassroots organisations or as a practitioner in urban or hip hop culture
  • Excellent English communication skills; Dutch proficiency is a plus
  • Multilingual skills are an advantage

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the development of a digital archive on Dutch urban and hip hop culture
  • Organise community-based archival events
  • Coordinate a white paper on urban and hip hop community archiving practices
  • Conduct and publish independent research (two peer-reviewed articles and one long-read)
  • Develop two educational lesson packages for high school teachers
  • Plan and prepare future outreach projects highlighting urban and hip hop culture
  • Participate actively in the LUCAS research community
