About the Position
The University of Galway invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher / Research Associate to join the Dark Sky Research Programme within the discipline of Geography. This full-time, fixed-term position (two years) is funded by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and available immediately until September 2027. The successful candidate will contribute to innovative research addressing light pollution, nocturnal environments, and sustainable dark-sky conservation. This interdisciplinary role bridges geography, environmental science, and policy, aligning with the University’s sustainability and environmental research goals. Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD (or equivalent) in Geography, Environmental Science, or a related discipline
- Strong analytical, research, and writing skills
- Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively within research teams
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in dark sky research, light pollution mapping, or environmental monitoring
- Familiarity with GIS, remote sensing, and spatial data analysis
- Demonstrated publication record and stakeholder communication experience
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct interdisciplinary research within the Dark Sky Research Programme
- Analyse light pollution data and assess environmental impacts
- Support field data collection, mapping, and analysis activities
- Collaborate with academic and policy partners (including NPWS)
- Contribute to publications, presentations, and public engagement initiatives
- Support reporting, project coordination, and outreach dissemination
