About Position/Job

Masaryk University, Faculty of Arts, invites applications for the position of Researcher (GIS) at the Department of Archaeology and Museology. This full-time research role is funded through the ERC Synergy project “CoCo – Connected Communities in Early Medieval Europe” and is designed for an early-career researcher (R1 level). The position focuses on landscape archaeology, applying Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and network analysis to study Early Medieval meeting places, settlement hierarchies, waterways, and production–distribution networks of prestigious artefacts in Central Europe.
The researcher will work under the supervision of prof. Mgr. Jiří Macháček, Ph.D. within an international and interdisciplinary research team. The project integrates digital methodologies, geomorphology, and archaeological datasets, aligning closely with the department’s research goals and ERC-funded innovation. The appointment is for three years, with the possibility of a one-year extension, starting 1 April 2026, based in Brno, Czech Republic.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Archaeology (required)
  • Professional focus on landscape or settlement archaeology
  • Knowledge of GIS software (ArcGIS or similar)
  • English language proficiency at B2 level or higher

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in Geography
  • Ongoing or planned PhD studies
  • Experience with network analysis tools (Gephi, Cytoscape) or statistical methods (R, SPSS)
  • Knowledge of Early Medieval archaeology in Central Europe
  • Czech or Slovak language skills (advantage)

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent and collaborative research within the ERC Synergy project CoCo
  • Apply GIS and network analysis to archaeological datasets
  • Analyse relationships between landscapes, settlements, and artefact distribution
  • Contribute to academic publications and conference presentations
  • Support operational and administrative activities of the department
