About Position/Job

University of Gothenburg invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in living benthic foraminifera and sediment biogeochemistry within the Department of Marine Sciences, Sweden. This 2-year postdoc is part of the FAME project: Fjord Alien Microeukaryotes – New Drivers of Ecosystem Functioning?, funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR). The role focuses on the contribution of invasive microeukaryotes such as Nonionella sp. T1 to fjord nitrogen and phosphorus cycling, combining fieldwork, laboratory analyses, and advanced data processing. The position offers international collaboration with experts from Sweden, France, and Germany, opportunities to publish in high-impact journals, participate in research-centred teaching, and engage in science outreach to schools and the public.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in marine geology, marine ecology, biogeochemistry or equivalent
  • Experience with benthic foraminifera and/or marine sediment biogeochemistry
  • Excellent oral and written English
  • Proven ability to lead and co-author scientific publications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Lab and statistical analysis of benthic foraminifera or microeukaryotes
  • Experience with epifluorescent microscopy
  • Knowledge of porewater nutrient analysis, chemoluminescence, or colourimetric methods
  • Experience using microelectrodes
  • Fieldwork experience (driver’s licence category B beneficial)
  • Strong social and communication skills
  • Experience in teaching BSc/MSc courses or science outreach

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct fieldwork, laboratory analyses, and data interpretation independently.
  • Analyse sediment samples for living benthic foraminifera
  • Perform nutrient analyses and evaluate sedimentary contributions of invasive species
  • Measure intracellular nitrate and phosphate in foraminifera
  • Participate in international collaborations, conferences, and publications
  • Engage in research-focused teaching and science outreach
