About the Position
The University of Basel invites applications for a Professorship in Egyptology (open rank) at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, beginning 1 August 2026 or by agreement. Depending on qualifications, the position may be filled as Tenure Track Assistant Professor (TTAP), Associate Professor, or Full Professor. The successful candidate will represent the full scope of Egyptology in both teaching and research, while contributing to the interdisciplinary vision of the Department of Ancient Civilizations. With strong links to archaeology, prehistory, and environmental sciences, this role offers the opportunity to develop innovative courses, supervise students at all levels, and strengthen Basel’s international reputation in Egyptology. Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:

- Demonstrated ability to obtain third-party research funding
- Commitment to collaborative and interdisciplinary academic work
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with innovative and digital teaching methods
- Interest in curriculum development and coordination across disciplines
- Ability to contribute to university administration and governance
- Proven record of international academic collaboration
Key Responsibilities
- Represent the field of Egyptology in teaching and research at all levels (BA, MA, PhD)
- Coordinate Egyptology curricula within the Department of Ancient Civilizations
- Collaborate with colleagues in archaeology, prehistory, and environmental sciences
- Secure third-party funding for individual and collaborative projects
- Contribute to university governance and departmental development
