The Cambridge Archaeological Unit (CAU) at the University of Cambridge invites applications for the Project Officer (Grade IV) role. This position focuses on directing medium to large-scale archaeological projects across East Anglia, covering prehistoric landscapes, Iron Age and Roman settlements, and urban sites. Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

Degree in Archaeology or closely related field (significant practical excavation experience considered)
In-depth knowledge of British archaeology and commercial fieldwork practices
Experience directing large, complex archaeological projects and supervising field teams
Understanding of post-excavation processes and reporting
Knowledge of health and safety in fieldwork
Clean UK/EU driving licence

Preferred Qualifications:

CIfA membership or equivalent professional recognition
First Aid at Work, SSSTS, manual handling, pipe & cable detection, asbestos awareness, or plant/vehicle marshalling training
Proven record of producing high-quality post-excavation reports and archaeological publications
Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and database management

Key Responsibilities

Lead and manage large field teams across excavations, surveys, and evaluations
Oversee projects from fieldwork to post-excavation assessment, analysis, and publication
Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental guidelines
Maintain resource efficiency and adhere to the University’s sustainability policies
Communicate effectively with clients, planning archaeologists, managers, specialists, and administrative staff
Supervise staff with professionalism, confidentiality, and diplomacy
