About Position/Job
The University of Gothenburg is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant in Archaeology to support the research project Tracing Carvers on the Rocks, focused on the computational analysis and digital recording of Nordic Bronze Age rock art. This full-time, fixed-term position (11 months) is based in Gothenburg, Sweden, within the Department of Historical Studies. Working closely with Professor Johan Ling and Professor Christian Horn, the role centres on Late Bronze Age art, with a strong emphasis on 3D recording, photogrammetry, laser scanning, GIS-based spatial analysis, and comparative European rock art studies. The project contributes to internationally recognised research on Scandinavian rock art and maritime archaeology, aligning closely with the department’s interdisciplinary research goals and strong heritage-sector collaborations. This role offers excellent access to specialist digital imaging equipment and a collaborative academic environment.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD in Archaeology or a related discipline
- Strong research experience in Nordic Bronze Age rock art
- Detailed knowledge of Scandinavian motifs and comparative European rock art
- Proven expertise in 3D recording, photogrammetry, and visualisation
- Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro)
- Experience handling large rock art datasets
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
Preferred Qualifications:
- Peer-reviewed publications in rock art or maritime archaeology
- Familiarity with Fornsök and Svenskt Hällristningsforskningsarkiv databases
- Experience in project management
- Excellent English and Spanish language skills
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and process 3D recordings of petroglyphs
- Conduct spatial analyses such as least-cost path modelling
- Contribute to image recognition model training
- Coordinate rock art components across departmental projects
- Support literature reviews, publications, and grant applications
