About the Position
The University of Southampton is inviting applications for a Research Fellow in Climate Dynamics within the School of Ocean and Earth Science. This exciting role is part of the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship Project titled “Accurate projections of climate recovery from a combination of historical data, simple models and AI”, led by Dr Duo Chan. The project aims to integrate historical climate data, physics-based models, and artificial intelligence to generate more reliable climate recovery projections for a net-zero future. The position offers an opportunity to collaborate with national and international partners in a vibrant oceanographic and climate research community at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton. Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD (or equivalent) in Climate Science, Environmental Science, Geosciences, or a related discipline
- Proven experience in climate model simulations and large-scale data analysis
- Strong foundation in climate dynamics, statistics, and data modelling
- Effective communication and teamwork skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with reduced-order modelling and Bayesian inference
- Familiarity with climate mitigation scenarios
- Experience in AI applications in climate science
- Evidence of scholarly research publications
Key Responsibilities
- Analyse Earth System Model simulations and diagnose inter-model processes
- Develop reduced-order models based on historical and palaeo data
- Apply Bayesian methods to constrain model parameters
- Collaborate with national and international research teams
- Publish findings in high-impact journals and present at academic conferences
- Support project leadership and contribute to interdisciplinary collaborations
