About Position/Job

The Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology (PCMA), University of Warsaw, invites expressions of interest from qualified bioarchaeologists for long-term collaboration in two interdisciplinary projects based in Old Dongola, Sudan. These projects explore medieval and early modern urban life through cemetery excavations and bioarchaeological analysis. This non-binding call precedes a formal recruitment process expected in late 2025.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD or equivalent in bioarchaeology, osteology, or related fields
  • Experience in excavation and skeletal analysis
  • Familiarity with isotope and biomolecular sampling
  • Willingness for long-term fieldwork abroad

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in African or medieval contexts
  • Team collaboration in interdisciplinary research
  • Strong reporting and academic writing skills

Key Responsibilities

  • Document and analyse human burials in the field
  • Conduct osteological and palaeopathological assessments
  • Collect and interpret isotope and aDNA data
  • Integrate bioarchaeological and archaeological datasets
  • Contribute to joint publications and a final project monograph
