About Position/Job
Masaryk University invites applications for the position of Researcher in Archaeometallurgy at the Department of Archaeology and Museology, Faculty of Arts. This full-time, fixed-term position (3 years with a possible 1-year extension) is part of the prestigious ERC Synergy project CoCo (Connected Communities in Early Medieval Europe). The successful candidate will work under the guidance of Prof. Mgr. Jiří Macháček, Ph.D. in Brno, Czech Republic, contributing to cutting-edge research on iron production, artefacts, and their socio-cultural networks in early medieval Central Europe. The role offers an interdisciplinary environment combining archaeometallurgical analyses, GIS spatial and network analysis, SEM-EDS microscopy, and statistical evaluation. Candidates will have the opportunity to publish and present research outcomes in collaboration with an international team of experts. Research Area
- Archaeometallurgy
- SEM-EDS microscopy and chemical composition analysis of iron artefacts, slags, and ores
- GIS spatial analysis and network analysis of iron production
- Statistical methods (PCA, cluster analysis, discriminant analysis)
- Early medieval archaeology in Central Europe
Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Master’s degree in Archaeology (mandatory)
- Focus on archaeometallurgy or archaeometry
- Knowledge of English (B2 minimum; C1/C2 preferred)
- Ability to perform independent research and collaborate in a research team
- IT skills relevant to research (GIS, SEM-EDS, databases, statistical methods)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of the Czech or Slovak language
- Ongoing or planned PhD studies
- Experience in interdisciplinary or international research projects
- Familiarity with university research environments
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct archaeometallurgical analyses of iron artefacts, ores, and slags
- Perform GIS spatial and network analysis for iron production studies
- Participate in research publications and presentations
- Assist in operational and administrative tasks under department guidance
- Collaborate in the ERC Synergy project CoCo team
