About Position/Job

Masaryk University invites applications for a Researcher (GEO) position at the Centre for the Digital Research of Religion, within the Department for the Study of Religions, Faculty of Arts, located in Brno, Czech Republic. This part-time, fixed-term research role is embedded within the Czech Science Foundation Junior Star project “Socio-Spatial Situatedness of Roman Professions and its Impact on Religion in the Roman Empire: A Formal Modelling Approach (SIPROME)”.

The position focuses on spatial analysis and GIS-based research to investigate how professional environments and geographical contexts shaped religious practices in the ancient Roman Empire. Using geocoded epigraphic and archaeological data, predictive modelling, and computational methods, the researcher will contribute to interdisciplinary digital humanities research. The role offers a collaborative international environment, strong institutional support, and opportunities for publication, conference participation, and methodological innovation in digital archaeology and the history of religions.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in Geography or a closely related field (degree may be completed by spring semester 2026)
  • Specialisation in Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Experience in publishing scientific research articles
  • English language proficiency at B2 level or higher

Preferred Qualifications:

  • English proficiency at the C1 level
  • Knowledge of the Czech or Slovak language
  • Experience in interdisciplinary or digital humanities research
  • Familiarity with the university research environment

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting spatial and GIS-based research within the SIPROME project
  • Performing vector and raster spatial analyses using tools such as QGIS or Python
  • Publishing research outputs in peer-reviewed journals
  • Presenting research at conferences and public academic events
