Researcher Position in Anthracology Position at CEPAM, CNRS, Nice, France
About Position/Job
A postdoctoral researcher position in anthracology is available at CEPAM (CNRS), Nice, France, as part of the AI-WOOD project funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR). This interdisciplinary role integrates wood anatomy, archaeobotany, and artificial intelligence to enhance the taxonomic identification of archaeological charcoal. The selected researcher will be involved in both the training of AI models using modern wood images and the application of these models to ancient charcoal remains from European archaeological contexts, spanning the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages. In collaboration with AI specialists and anthracological experts, the postdoctoral scholar will contribute to the creation of an AI-powered identification tool and an open-access image database, supporting both academic and industrial applications. This opportunity is ideal for candidates with expertise in anthracology and wood anatomy, an interest in machine learning, and a commitment to advancing knowledge of past forest environments and human-environment dynamics through digital innovation.
