Fellowship Overview
Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS) invites applications for the Human Past Fellowship Programme 2026, a funded international research fellowship designed for postdoctoral researchers and senior academics in archaeology, population genetics and historical linguistics. This residential fellowship supports advanced interdisciplinary research on human prehistory and large-scale migration patterns across global regions. Moreover, it promotes high-impact scholarly work within a world-class academic environment.
Fellows will undertake a structured research residency for one semester or a full academic year in Uppsala, Sweden. During this period, they actively participate in seminars, workshops and expert-led academic discussions. In addition, the programme allows complete focus on independent research output, including publications, articles and long-term scholarly projects. Therefore, it provides both intellectual freedom and strong institutional support.
The fellowship is closely linked to human past research themes, especially Indo-European, Bantu and Austronesian expansions. Furthermore, it encourages interdisciplinary approaches connecting archaeology, genetics and linguistics with global historical debates. Researchers working on ancient migrations, population history and cultural evolution are strongly encouraged to apply. Consequently, the programme fosters innovative and collaborative international research networks.
Applicants must hold a PhD with a strong academic publication record and demonstrated research independence. In addition, candidates should show active engagement in international scholarly communities. Therefore, researchers from diverse institutions and global backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply for this competitive opportunity.
The fellowship provides a stipend, accommodation support and research resources. However, travel and additional allowances may vary depending on individual circumstances.
