About Position/Job
University of Reading is seeking a Technician – Teaching & Research to join the Technical Services team supporting laboratory-based teaching practicals in the School of Archaeology, Geography and Environmental Science (SAGES). This permanent, full-time position offers an exciting opportunity for candidates with a background in physical earth, environmental, or archaeological sciences. You will maintain, operate, and support analytical laboratory facilities such as ICP-OES, GCs, MP-AES, Elemental Analysers, Spectrophotometers, and Ion Chromatography. As part of a collaborative technical team, you will engage with both teaching and research activities, assisting undergraduate and postgraduate students, helping with field-class testing, and supporting dissertation projects. This role contributes to world-leading research addressing global challenges, including climate change, natural disasters, and historical human impacts, and aligns with the University’s commitment to interdisciplinary education and inclusivity.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- HNC, AS/A-Level, NVQ3 in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, or related subjects
- Technical experience in specialist laboratories, preferably teaching or research labs
- Ability to maintain, set up, and demonstrate laboratory practicals
Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree in relevant science with practical laboratory experience
- Familiarity with analytical instruments (ICP-OES, GCs, MP-AES, Elemental Analysers, Spectrophotometers, Ion Chromatography)
- Experience with field sampling and student project supervision
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and operate analytical laboratory facilities for teaching and research
- Set up, run, and demonstrate laboratory practicals for undergraduate and postgraduate students
- Support the dissertation student’s laboratory work
- Process environmental, archaeological, and biological samples (soil, water, plants, seeds, microorganisms)
- Maintain portable field-testing devices for field classes
- Order equipment and consumables, ensure laboratory safety and cleanliness
- Assist other technical divisions when required
