About Position/Job
The University of Warsaw’s Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology (PCMA) invites applications for a fully funded postdoctoral position in archaeology. The successful candidate will join the research project “Kyriakós oíkos? Diachronic Conceptualisation of Space and Function of Medieval Nubian Churches,” funded by the National Science Centre (NCN) under the Sonata BIS-11 programme. This interdisciplinary project explores transformations in Christian sacred architecture in medieval Nubia (6th–14th century AD), integrating digital tools such as 3D modelling and architectural analysis.
This postdoctoral opportunity offers a unique chance to contribute to pioneering research in African and Mediterranean archaeology, while working with one of the leading archaeological research centres in Central Europe.

Research Area

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD in archaeology or related discipline (earned outside UW or with an international postdoc)
- International research experience
- Fluent English (spoken and written)
- Proficiency in CAD software
- Experience in architectural analysis and 3D reconstructions
- Understanding of Christian sacred architecture
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong publication record
- Active participation in international research projects
- Fieldwork experience
- Experience with grant applications and conference presentations
- Recognition in academic awards or distinctions
Key Responsibilities
- Gather and vectorise documentation of Byzantine churches
- Create 3D models of churches (structure and interiors)
- Conduct architectural and semiotic analysis of Nubian church architecture
- Publish research findings and present at academic conferences
