About the Position

Dalhousie University’s School of Planning invites applications for a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship focused on cumulative climate risks and spatial data visualisation. In collaboration with CLIMAtlantic, this role supports the development of an interactive geospatial planning tool addressing climate hazards across Atlantic Canada. Under the leadership of Dr. Eric Rapaport, the fellow will engage in applied, interdisciplinary research at the intersection of GIS, climate science, and regional planning, contributing directly to policy-ready tools that help communities prepare for climate-related risks. The project offers a rare opportunity to work alongside experts and non-profit practitioners, while furthering scholarly understanding and public communication of cumulative climate impacts.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD (or near completion) in Planning, Environmental Studies, Geography, or related field
  • Experience in GIS-based climate modelling and risk assessment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, PAVICS, Python, NetCDF datasets
  • Ability to create user-facing geospatial tools
  • Familiarity with climate communication, data storytelling, and end-user research
  • Knowledge of THREDDS, Java (optional)
  • Bilingual fluency in English and French (preferred)
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a web-based geospatial tool to map cumulative climate impacts
  • Integrate multi-source datasets including Climatedata.ca, flood maps, water quality, etc.
  • Conduct validation using historical hazard data
  • Collaborate with CLIMAtlantic’s team to ensure policy relevance and public access
  • Support publication and presentation of project results
