PhD Position in Linguistics and Cognitive Science at University of Tübingen, Germany

About the Program

The University of Tübingen, Faculty of Humanities, Department of Linguistics, invites applications for a PhD researcher position focused on language evolution, probabilistic or evolutionary modelling, and primate communication. Starting in November 2025, this fully funded opportunity is part of the project “Modeling Great Ape Signaling Behavior”, under the Collaborative Research Centre “Common Ground” (CRC1718), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The project explores how great apes use gestures, vocalisations and facial expressions to communicate, aiming to understand the evolution of common ground — a key element in the origins of human language. This role is perfect for motivated candidates passionate about computational and evolutionary approaches to communication. You will join a supportive, international team, benefit from advanced research training, and contribute to a highly interdisciplinary, cutting-edge project.
