Fully Funded PhD in Archaeological Sciences at CNRS – Apply by 15 August 2025

About the Programme

The National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) is offering a fully funded PhD position in Archaeological Sciences through the Archéosciences-Bordeaux research unit, in collaboration with the University of Perpignan (CRHiSM, EA 2984) and the Centre for Alexandrian Studies (CEAlex). The project is titled “The Lighthouse of Alexandria: An Ordinary Tool Serving an Extraordinary Economy?” and focuses on the historical function and economic significance of the Lighthouse of Alexandria between the 3rd century BCE and the 14th century CE.

The doctoral researcher will be primarily based in Alexandria, Egypt, with frequent research visits to partner institutions in France. This interdisciplinary project combines textual and iconographic analysis, field archaeology, archaeometric techniques, and underwater investigations carried out by CEAlex. The programme aligns with the scientific priorities of the University of Bordeaux Montaigne and offers a unique opportunity for early-stage researchers to engage with international academic networks and leading research infrastructure.
