About the Position

The University of Graz invites applications for a Professorship in Ancient History at its Institute of Antiquity within the Faculty of Humanities. The position focuses on the history of Greco-Roman antiquity across the entire Mediterranean region, from Greek Archaic to Roman Late Antiquity. The successful candidate will teach in BA, MA, and doctoral programmes, complementing modules in Archaeology, History, and Classical Philology. Expertise in epigraphy and/or numismatics is highly desirable. The role involves active participation in the transdisciplinary doctoral program “Ancient Cultures of the Mediterranean Region”, the faculty focus area “Transmediterranean Entanglements – Movements and Relations in the Mediterranean and Beyond”, and the university profile area “Dimensions of Europe”. Candidates are expected to engage in interdisciplinary research, international collaboration, and mentoring of young scholars, contributing to the University’s commitment to excellence, diversity, and scientific innovation.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Doctorate or equivalent higher education in Ancient History
  • Habilitation or equivalent qualification in Ancient History
  • Proven expertise in Greek and Roman history through publications
  • Experience in competitive research funding acquisition
  • Competence in university teaching and digital didactics
  • Supervision of doctoral and early-career researchers
  • International experience and academic networking

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Leadership and management experience in academic settings
  • Competence in gender mainstreaming and diversity management
  • Excellent German and English language skills (or willingness to acquire within three years)

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach courses across BA, MA, and doctoral programmes in Ancient History
  • Conduct high-quality interdisciplinary research in Greco-Roman studies
  • Contribute to faculty and university focus areas, including doctoral programs
  • Supervise and mentor young researchers and doctoral candidates
  • Actively participate in international collaborations, publications, and conferences
  • Support academic self-administration and departmental initiatives
