About the Position
The Philipps University of Marburg, founded in 1527, invites applications for a Research Assistant (E 13 TV-H) in the Department of Christian Archaeology and Byzantine Art History, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Beate Böhlendorf-Arslan. This part-time, fixed-term position is part of the research project “The Development of the Byzantine City of Assos from the 8th to the 15th Century.” The post focuses on exploring the Byzantine and early Ottoman acropolis of Assos, using archaeological and art-historical methods to uncover the city’s evolution through the Middle and Late Byzantine periods. The role offers valuable experience in documentation, fieldwork, and academic publishing, contributing to an internationally significant archaeological project.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Completed Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Christian Archaeology and Byzantine Art History
- Proven experience with Assos excavations
- Strong skills in archaeological fieldwork, survey methods, and findings documentation
Preferred Qualifications:
- Expertise in ceramics and small finds recording
- Proficiency in FileMaker Pro, QGIS, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator
- Strong teamwork, resilience, and academic writing skills
Key Responsibilities
- Documentation and evaluation of medieval settlement remains on the Acropolis
- Conducting archaeological soundings and processing findings
- Cataloguing findings and artefacts
- Preparing scientific publications and contributing to project reports
- Engaging in collaborative research and interdisciplinary discussions
