About the Program

The University of Warsaw invites applications for a fully-funded ERC PhD position in Geoarchaeology (GEOARCHEO) as part of the INASIA research team. This 42-month doctoral project, starting 1 March 2026, focuses on stone raw material analysis and procurement in high-mountain regions of Central Asia, including the western Tien Shan and Pamir-Alai. The PhD combines fieldwork, archaeological excavations, geospatial mapping, petrographic analysis, and publication of research results. The successful candidate will gain experience in interdisciplinary research, contribute to international collaborations, and develop expertise in archaeological geology, raw material provenance studies, and high-altitude fieldwork. Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in archaeology, geography, geology, or related discipline
  • PhD student status at UW Doctoral School of Humanities, Exact and Natural Sciences, or Interdisciplinary Doctoral School, or eligibility under exceeding-the-limits procedure starting spring semester 2025/2026
  • Ability to read and analyse geological maps
  • Experience in geological mapping, rock identification, and microscopic rock/mineral analysis
  • Willingness to conduct high-mountain fieldwork in Uzbekistan
  • Advanced written and spoken English
  • Strong teamwork skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience conducting field research to identify rock outcrops
  • Knowledge of Central Asia’s geological structure
  • Experience with petrographic methods: geochemical analysis, microscopic thin-section analysis
  • Documented publication record in peer-reviewed journals
