About the Position
The Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) invites applications for a full-time Archaeologist and Historian to contribute to the ANR PRC FACE (2026–2029) project: From Achaemenid to Christian Era. Places of power and territorial dynamics from the 6th century BC to the 7th century AD. Based within UMR 5648 CIHAM in Lyon, this role focuses on the Axuryan Valley (Širak Province, Armenia) and involves interdisciplinary research linking archaeology, numismatics, archival analysis, and historical studies. The selected researcher will work closely with French and Armenian teams, contributing to field missions, museum documentation, digital databases, and scholarly outputs. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage with ancient and Late Antique Armenian history through excavation archives, artefact analysis, and international collaboration, supporting the department’s commitment to innovative historical and archaeological research.

Eligibility and Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD in History, Archaeology or a related field
- Four to ten years of relevant research experience
- Expertise in ancient numismatics
- Excellent command of Armenian in written and spoken form
- Ability to analyse excavation archives held in Armenian institutions
- Strong knowledge of Ancient and Late Antique Armenia
- Experience working with museum collections and artefact documentation
- Competence in managing digital databases and metadata
- Basic proficiency in French
- Professional proficiency in English
- Strong organisational and independent working skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working within international research teams
- Strong ability to synthesise complex documentation
- Familiarity with interdisciplinary archaeological methods
- Experience contributing to scientific publications and outreach activities
Key Responsibilities
- Identify, collect and analyse archaeological excavation archives in Armenian institutions
- Create a full site inventory and analytical bibliography
- Study archaeological artefacts with a central focus on numismatics
- Verify and update museum inventories in Armenia
- Integrate archaeological and historical data into the project’s digital database
- Support chronological and territorial analysis of sites
- Prepare scientific summaries and contribute to collective publications
- Participate in scientific outreach activities
- Collaborate closely with French and Armenian academic teams
- Undertake field missions in Yerevan and Gyumri
