About the Program
CNRS – National Centre for Scientific Research invites applications for a fully funded PhD in Evolutionary Microbiology, Paleomicrobiology and Biogeochemistry titled “Evolutionary microbiology, paleomicrobiology and biogeochemistry” at the Laboratoire Chrono-Environnement. This doctoral research focuses on understanding the long-term links between heavy metal pollution and antibiotic resistance genes using ancient and modern environmental DNA from sediment cores. Funded by the ERC Horizon Europe Paleo-MARE project, the PhD addresses globally significant challenges related to antimicrobial resistance and biogeochemical cycles. The research integrates metagenomics, bioinformatics, microbial ecology, and time-series modelling within an interdisciplinary framework. The project is based in Besançon, France, and benefits from a state-of-the-art paleogenetics laboratory, offering strong academic training, international exposure, and career development. The expected start date is February 2026, with a standard three-year doctoral duration.
