The University of Warsaw is recruiting an Assistant Professor in Classical Archaeology within the Faculty of Archaeology. This full-time, temporary research and teaching position is based in Warsaw, Poland, with the appointment beginning on 1 October 2026. The successful candidate will contribute to research, university teaching, and academic service within the Chair of Classical Archaeology

The successful candidate will join the Chair of Classical Archaeology, contributing to research focused on the archaeology of ancient Greece and Rome while supporting undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. The position also involves developing independent research, participating in international academic activities, and strengthening collaboration within the Faculty of Archaeology through scholarly engagement and professional expertise.

In addition to these duties, the role combines research excellence with practical academic experience through teaching, archaeological fieldwork, and public engagement. Applicants should demonstrate expertise in Classical Archaeology, knowledge of Mediterranean material culture, and experience in higher education. Eligibility / Qualifications

Candidates applying for this Assistant Professor in Classical Archaeology position should meet the following qualifications:

  • A PhD degree in archaeology or an equivalent qualification, with a doctoral thesis related to Classical Archaeology or the reception of antiquity.
  • Eligibility under Article 113 of the Polish Law on Higher Education and Science.
  • Fluency in English and advanced proficiency in a second foreign language, with Italian preferred.
  • Expertise in the material culture of ancient Greece and Rome, particularly ancient art, together with knowledge of museum studies.
  • Documented participation in international scientific conferences, research projects, and archaeological fieldwork at Mediterranean sites.
  • Experience in university-level teaching, science communication, and public engagement.
  • Sufficient knowledge of Polish to teach university courses.

  • Conduct independent research in Classical Archaeology.
  • Deliver teaching within undergraduate and postgraduate archaeology programmes.
  • Publish scholarly research and participate in international conferences.
