About the Position

The University of Basel invites applications for a funded Postdoctoral (Postdoc) position in Environmental / Landscape Archaeology at the Department of Ancient Civilizations, located in Basel, Switzerland. This exciting academic opportunity focuses on Roman villa ecosystems, climate–society interactions, and rural production systems in central Italy. Moreover, it contributes to international research initiatives in environmental archaeology and ancient history.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively within the SNSF-funded project “The Roman Villa as Ecosystem: Climate, Production, and Society in the Sabina Tiberina.” They will undertake independent research using landscape-archaeological frameworks, legacy survey datasets, and palaeoclimate data. In addition, access to leading research libraries and advanced facilities ensures a productive environment for high-impact publications and academic growth.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Environmental Archaeology, Landscape Archaeology, Geography, or a closely related discipline. They should demonstrate strong experience in Mediterranean landscape archaeology and environmental data integration. Furthermore, candidates with skills in regional analysis, interdisciplinary research, and scientific communication will be highly valued.
