Postdoctoral Researcher Position in Epigraphy and Digital Humanities at Università degli Studi di Bari, Italy

University of Bari Aldo Moro (Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher Position in Epigraphy and Digital Humanities within its Department of Humanities. The 12-month fixed-term appointment supports the research project From Documentary Dematerialisation to Epigraphic Corpora of the Nineteenth Century: The Unpublished Correspondence Giovanni Battista de Rossi–Wilhelm Henzen (1845–1886) and welcomes researchers with expertise in epigraphy, digital humanities, handwritten text recognition, and document digitisation.

The appointed researcher will examine unpublished correspondence exchanged between Giovanni Battista de Rossi and Wilhelm Henzen from 1845 to 1886 while preparing an analytical study, historical commentary, and critical edition of the collection. The project requires extensive use of Transkribus for automated handwritten text recognition, AI model training, and the development of a searchable digital archive that supports long-term access to important historical documents.

In addition, the position combines historical research with digital technologies to preserve nineteenth-century documentary heritage through advanced digitisation methods. The successful candidate will apply expertise in epigraphy, the history of epigraphic studies, and AI-assisted transcription while contributing to accurate scholarly interpretation and the creation of reliable digital research resources.

Furthermore, the project promotes interdisciplinary collaboration across cultural studies, digital humanities, archival research, and digital preservation. The resulting critical edition and digital archive will strengthen future research on nineteenth-century epigraphy while improving access to documentary collections for the wider academic community.
