About the PhD Position
Swansea University invites applications for a funded AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Partnership PhD studentship in History and Heritage Studies in collaboration with Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales. The project is based in Swansea and Cardiff, Wales.
This doctoral research opportunity explores colonial histories within natural science museum collections. In addition, the project investigates how heritage institutions can collaborate more effectively with diasporic, migrant, and refugee communities. The research contributes to international scholarship in history, museum studies, heritage interpretation, and postcolonial studies.
The successful candidate will contribute to an interdisciplinary research environment within the Department of History, Heritage, and Classics. The researcher will also collaborate closely with specialists at the Museum of Wales. In addition, the researcher will examine archival records, botanical and zoological collections, and museum documentation connected to British imperial networks. Access to major museum collections, expert supervision, and collaborative heritage projects will provide excellent opportunities for academic development and high-impact publications.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree with Merit or an equivalent qualification in History, Heritage Studies, Museum Studies, or related disciplines. Strong analytical, communication, and research skills are essential. Furthermore, applicants with experience in archival research, cultural heritage, colonial history, or participatory research methods will be highly valued.
This is a fully funded PhD position, full-time or part-time, starting in October 2026. The scholarship covers full tuition fees, an annual UKRI stipend of £21,805, an enhanced £600 yearly allowance, and additional research funding support. PhD Eligibility Criteria
