About the Position

Newcastle University’s School of History, Classics and Archaeology invites applications for a Lecturer in Ancient History (Teaching & Scholarship). This full-time, fixed-term position will run for 12 months from 1 September 2025, with a focus on Roman History. The appointee will teach undergraduate and postgraduate students, supervise dissertations, and contribute to the delivery of scholarship-informed modules in Classics and Ancient History. Working closely with Dr Simon Corcoran, Head of the Classics section, the successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary department known for its excellent research environment, collaborative culture, and strong regional ties—including its proximity to Hadrian’s Wall and access to the Robinson Library and Great North Museum collections. Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

PhD in Ancient History, Classics, or a closely related discipline
Experience in teaching Roman History at university level
Evidence of high-quality teaching and academic engagement

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in curriculum design and development
Strong commitment to interdisciplinary and collaborative teaching
Administrative or pastoral experience in a university setting

Key Responsibilities

Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Roman History
Supervise student dissertations and projects
Contribute to team-taught and core modules across Classics and Ancient History
Engage with departmental administrative and pastoral responsibilities
