About the Programme
The Integrative Prehistory and Archaeological Science (IPAS) unit at the University of Basel invites applications for a fully-funded PhD position in archaeobotany, beginning August 2025 (latest start: October 2025). The position is part of the SNF Weave/Lead Agency Project “Deciphering Lakeside Settlements”, focusing on Neolithic lakeshore archaeology in Switzerland. IPAS offers a collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment integrating the natural sciences and humanities to explore the human past.
Hosted in the Department of Environmental Sciences, this project provides opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration in fields like palynology, archaeozoology, isotopic research, and sediment genetics. The position includes research travel funding, conference support, and access to a well-equipped laboratory near the university campus.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in archaeology and/or biology

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience or interest in archaeobotany
- Background in wetland archaeology or ecology
- Strong academic performance
- Knowledge of German is advantageous
