About Position/Job

The Interdisciplinary Center for Archaeology and the Evolution of Human Behaviour (ICArEHB) at the University of Algarve is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Geochronology / Plio-Pleistocene Geology or related fields. This exciting role is part of the ERC Starting Grant project WRAP – Western Rift Archaeology and Palaeoenvironments Project, a pioneering initiative exploring the deep prehistory of human occupations in the western rift of Africa. The successful candidate will contribute to innovative research integrating geochronological data with archaeological and palaeoenvironmental records to better understand hominin occupations and palaeoecology. This position offers the chance to work in a diverse, interdisciplinary team, undertake fieldwork in challenging locations, and contribute to high-impact scientific publications, making it a perfect opportunity for researchers passionate about human evolution and earth sciences.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in Geochronology, Quaternary Geology, Geoarchaeology, or a related field
  • Specialist knowledge of dating methods used in Pleistocene archaeology
  • Solid background in field sampling strategies for geochronology
  • Experience integrating geochronological data with archaeological and palaeoenvironmental records
  • Familiarity with Pleistocene hominin occupations and African palaeoecology
  • Ability to undertake extended fieldwork in remote areas
  • Excellent English communication and teamwork skills
  • Strong publication record in international peer-reviewed journals
  • Experience collaborating on research article development

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in statistical coding or modelling (R or Python)
  • Experience with GIS
  • Previous postdoctoral experience

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct field sampling and geochronological analyses
