About the Position
The University of Warsaw invites applications for a funded Adjunct (Postdoctoral) position in archaeology (bioarchaeology) at the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, Poland. This role is part of the NCN OPUS project Life in the Makurian Metropolis: A Bioarchaeological Inquiry into Medieval Old Dongola, Sudan. This opportunity is based at the Centre for Mediterranean Archaeology and focuses on medieval bioarchaeology in Sudan. The project explores Life in the Makurycka Metropolis through advanced scientific and archaeological methods.
This project investigates medieval Old Dongola, a key Nubian capital occupied from the 5th to the 14th century, and a cultural hub along the Nile. Therefore, research explores burial practices, population structure, and landscape archaeology using advanced digital and field-based methods. Moreover, the study integrates isotopic analysis, cemetery excavation, and topographic modelling to reconstruct past human life.
The successful candidate will contribute to excavation campaigns in Sudan while working with an international research team led by Dr Antonio Caruso. In addition, they will apply photogrammetry, GIS modelling, and 3D documentation techniques to funerary structures. Access to cutting-edge research infrastructure and international expertise ensures strong academic development and high-impact publications.
Applicants must hold a PhD in archaeology, geomatics, or a related discipline with strong fieldwork experience. Strong experience in funerary archaeology, topography, and field documentation is essential for this role. Furthermore, expertise in interdisciplinary methods, archaeological GIS, and analytical reporting will be highly valued for collaborative research success.

Eligibility Criteria
Minimum Requirements
- PhD in Archaeology, Geomatics, or related field
- At least two seasons of archaeological fieldwork experience
- Experience in funerary archaeology or a related discipline
- Strong academic publication and research background
- Fluency in English (written and spoken)
Preferred Qualifications
- Specialisation in Nubian or Egyptian archaeology
- Experience with Sudan fieldwork projects
