About Position/Job

The University of Exeter is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate in Papyrology (Coptic Papyri) to contribute to the prestigious ERC-funded project Education in Graeco-Roman Egypt: An Intercultural Approach (EduGRE). This project investigates ancient educational practices through multilingual papyri and artefacts from Graeco-Roman Egypt. The role supports the department’s commitment to innovative, interdisciplinary research in the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. A key feature of this position is the opportunity to develop digital editions and contribute to an open-access online platform housing educational texts in Coptic and other ancient languages.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD (or near completion) in Egyptology, Classics, Ancient History, or related field

  • Familiarity with digital editing and publication tools

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in interdisciplinary research
  • Background in Late Antiquity studies
  • Knowledge of Demotic, Greek, or Latin texts

Key Responsibilities

  • Create born-digital editions of Coptic papyri and related materials
  • Contribute to a digital platform with images, metadata, and 3D artefacts
  • Conduct original research on ancient education in Late Antiquity
  • Collaborate with project team members and contribute to events
  • Assist in the development and dissemination of research outputs
