About the Position
The University of Nottingham’s School of Geography invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate/Fellow (Fixed Term) in Climate Studies. This position is a part of the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship project “Constructing Climate Coloniality: Histories, Knowledges and Materialities of Climate Adaptation in Southern Africa.” Supervised by Dr Matthew Hannaford, this 30-month, full-time post explores the historical and contemporary intersections of climate, colonialism, and adaptation in western Zimbabwe, southern Mozambique, and southern Malawi. The successful candidate will research the transformation of environmental knowledge and practices in southern Malawi during the 19th and 20th centuries. This position offers an exceptional opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration through archival and oral history research, co-production workshops, and engagement with international partners, contributing to the School’s mission to advance impactful and globally relevant geographical knowledge.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD (or near completion) in History, Geography, or a related discipline
- Demonstrated experience in archival and/or oral history research
- Strong publication record in African or environmental/climate history
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of languages relevant to Southern Africa
- Experience in interdisciplinary or collaborative research projects
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct original research on climate knowledge formation in southern Malawi during the 19th–20th centuries
- Collaborate with project partners on archival, oral, and field research
- Contribute to co-production workshops and dissemination activities
- Publish high-quality academic outputs in relevant journals
- Participate in project meetings and international fieldwork
