Postdoctoral Fellow in Archaeometry – Chronological Modelling – CNRS, France

Looking for a postdoctoral opportunity in France? CNRS is offering a 16-month postdoctoral position in archaeometry and chronological modelling in Saint-Aubin, Essonne, France. The role focuses on archaeological chronology, using scientific dating, modelling and evidence from ancient construction.

The project examines the history of Notre-Dame de Paris, with particular attention to the different stages in the construction of its structural shell. It combines archaeological evidence with dating methods, ancient metallurgy and chronological modelling.

The researcher will review existing data, develop assumptions for time-series modelling and bring the available evidence together within the chosen model. The work will also involve collecting additional dating data, validating the model and publishing the findings.

The wider research aims to improve understanding of the ancient and medieval worlds through scientific approaches to chronology. The researcher will join the Carbon-14 Measurement Laboratory team at the CEA Saclay centre and work with the ARTEMIS National Instrument.

Key Responsibilities

The CNRS postdoctoral position in archaeometry involves the following main responsibilities:

  • Review available data and critically assess information relevant to chronological reconstruction.
  • Develop time-series assumptions for the chronological modelling process.
  • Integrate research data into the selected time-series model.
  • Select appropriate modelling tools for analysing chronological evidence.
  • Acquire additional dating data for the chronological modelling work.
  • Validate the chronological model and publish the research findings.

Salary and Benefits

The position offers the following salary and benefits, depending on the candidate’s experience.

  • Salary: €3,000–€3,150 gross per month
  • Annual Leave and RTT: 44 days
  • Teleworking: Teleworking is available with compensation.
  • Transport: 75% of transport costs covered
  • Sustainable Mobility: Mobility allowance of up to €300
