About the Position
The Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology at the University of Warsaw is recruiting a Research Assistant in Geoarchaeology for the ERC Consolidator Grant-funded project Afropolis Tungul: Urban Biography of a Cosmopolitan African Capital. The project explores the long-term urban development of Tungul (Old Dongola) in Sudan, from its role as the capital of the Kingdom of Makuria to its transformation under the Funj sultanate (16th–19th centuries). The selected candidate will support geoarchaeological fieldwork and research in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team, contributing to the analysis of settlement continuity, environmental dynamics, and urban transformation in the Nile Valley. This is a full-time temporary role, ideal for candidates with field experience in geoarchaeology and a strong interest in African and urban archaeology. Fieldwork in Sudan is required. The post starts in January 2026.
