Research Assistant Position in Geoarchaeology at University of Warsaw, Poland – Apply by 14 September 2025

About the Position

The Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology at the University of Warsaw is recruiting a Research Assistant in Geoarchaeology for the ERC Consolidator Grant-funded project Afropolis Tungul: Urban Biography of a Cosmopolitan African Capital. The project explores the long-term urban development of Tungul (Old Dongola) in Sudan, from its role as the capital of the Kingdom of Makuria to its transformation under the Funj sultanate (16th–19th centuries). The selected candidate will support geoarchaeological fieldwork and research in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team, contributing to the analysis of settlement continuity, environmental dynamics, and urban transformation in the Nile Valley. This is a full-time temporary role, ideal for candidates with field experience in geoarchaeology and a strong interest in African and urban archaeology. Fieldwork in Sudan is required. The post starts in January 2026.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in geoarchaeology, archaeology, or earth sciences
  • Strong command of English
  • Fieldwork experience in geoarchaeological sampling and documentation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the Nile Valley or similar regions
  • Familiarity with GIS and geoarchaeological laboratory methods
  • Willingness to participate in extended fieldwork in Sudan
  • Interest in interdisciplinary collaboration with archaeologists, environmental scientists, and historians

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct geoarchaeological fieldwork and sampling in Sudan
  • Support analysis of stratigraphy, sediments, and environmental conditions
  • Document findings and assist with the interpretation of urban and environmental data
  • Collaborate with other team members including archaeologists, geomorphologists, and environmental specialists
  • Contribute to research reports and project publications
  • Maintain regular communication with the project director
