About Position/Job
The University of York is inviting applications for a Research Associate (Remote Sensing and Survey) within its internationally recognised Department of Archaeology. This full-time, fixed-term post is part of the ERC Advanced Grant–funded project “Zambezian Entanglements in the South-Central African Iron Age (ZAMBEZI)”, a five-year research programme beginning in January 2026.
The role focuses on remote sensing, GIS, and landscape-scale archaeological analysis in the Middle Zambezi Valley, centred on the site of Ingombe Ilede (Zambia) and its wider regional context. The successful candidate will contribute to innovative methodologies combining drone-based LiDAR, geophysical survey, and field archaeology, working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary international research team. This position offers excellent opportunities for postdoctoral researchers to develop advanced technical skills and engage in impactful African archaeology research.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD in Archaeology or a closely related discipline
- Demonstrated expertise in remote sensing, survey, and GIS
- Experience with geophysical survey techniques
- Proven research track record in a relevant archaeological field
- Experience participating in and/or leading archaeological fieldwork
- Willingness to undertake fieldwork in Zambia and Zimbabwe
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience applying novel digital and geospatial methodologies
- Prior research experience in African archaeology or landscape studies
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and contribute to remote sensing and GIS analysis for the ZAMBEZI project
- Support regional settlement and landscape interpretation using advanced technologies
- Participate in and contribute to archaeological fieldwork in southern Africa
- Collaborate with project researchers and international partners
- Contribute to research outputs, including publications and reports
