Research Engineer Position in Paleoclimatic Data Analysis – University of Bordeaux, Pessac, France | Apply by 16 May 2026

About the Position

The University of Bordeaux invites applications for a funded Research Engineer position in paleoclimatic data analysis at the EPOC laboratory in Pessac, France. This exciting opportunity focuses on Hominin–Climate relationships during the Middle Pleistocene Transition, combining palaeoclimatology, archaeology, and environmental science. Moreover, it directly contributes to the Human Past research programme and international climate–human evolution studies.

The Oceanic and Continental Environments and Palaeoenvironments (EPOC)  is a Joint Research Unit under the joint supervision of the University of Bordeaux, the CNRS, Bordeaux INP and the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes. It is a multidisciplinary UMR developing a strong and recognised expertise in ecotoxicology, ecology, biogeochemistry, environmental chemistry, sedimentology, palaeoclimatology, coastal oceanography, and marine geosciences. 

The successful candidate will join the EPOC research group (GPR) to study Hominin–Climate relationships in Eurasia during the Middle Pleistocene Transition. The role focuses on pollen analysis from deep-sea sedimentary sequences of the Iberian margin and integrates ecological niche modelling, Eurasian paleoclimatic database development, and archaeological dataset comparison. Access to advanced research tools and interdisciplinary datasets supports strong academic development and high-impact scientific output in global climate research.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree or PhD in palaeoclimatology, palynology, or computer science with strong analytical expertise. Preferably, candidates demonstrate experience in R, MATLAB, ecological modelling tools such as MaxEnt and GARP, and archaeological database processing.

This is a full-time Research Engineer position for 12 months starting September 2026, offering a competitive salary under a fully funded contract. Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in palaeoclimatology, palynology, or computer science
  • Experience in archaeological and paleoclimatic databases
  • Strong skills in MATLAB and R programming
  • Knowledge of ecological modelling tools (MaxEnt, GARP)
  • Scientific English proficiency (C1/C2 level)
