About the Program

Queen’s University Belfast invites applications for a fully funded PhD in Archaeology and Palaeoecology within the School of Natural and Built Environment. This exciting project explores upland occupation from the Medieval to Modern period, aiming to understand long-term human-environment interactions across Northern Ireland. By integrating archaeological, palaeoenvironmental, and historical approaches, the project addresses key questions about settlement, abandonment, and sustainable land use in upland regions. The project is fully funded by the Department for the Economy (DfE) and offers a competitive stipend, tuition fee coverage, and access to exceptional research facilities. Research Focus

Human settlement and land use in uplands (1000 AD to present)
Palaeoenvironmental reconstruction using peat and sediment cores
Application of tephrochronology, palynology, and macrofossil analysis
Engagement with local communities on cultural heritage and sustainability
Interdisciplinary methodology combining archaeology, ecology, history

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

A minimum of a strong Upper Second-Class Honours (2:1) degree
Academic background in Palaeoecology, Physical Geography, Biology, Ecology, or related disciplines

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with microscopy, fieldwork, or lab analysis
Strong interest or background in ecology/palaeoecology/statistics
Excellent communication skills for community engagement
Willingness to work in both field and lab settings
