About the Program
The University of Bern invites applications for a fully funded PhD position within the SNF Consolidator Project “Ageing and Old Age in the 4th–6th Century Roman Empire: Religious, Legal, Social, and Physical Dimensions” (RomAge). This interdisciplinary research initiative investigates how the rise of Christianity influenced perceptions of ageing in Late Antiquity. The subproject focuses on legal and social dimensions of shifting attitudes toward old age, inspired by social gerontology.

- Required Degree/Diploma: Master’s degree in Classical Philology, Roman Law, History, Religious History, Theology, Archaeology, or a related discipline.
Research Focus/Area
- Legal and social constructions of ageing in Late Antiquity
- Comparison of pre-Christian and Christian legal terminology
- Age-based restrictions in civil and ecclesiastical professions
- Legislation on elder care, widowhood, retirement, and family structures
- Historical sources: Greek and Latin legal, epigraphic, and religious texts
Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Master’s degree in a relevant field
- Advanced proficiency in Latin and Greek
- Interest in Late Antique legal and social history
- German language proficiency (C2 level)
- Excellent command of English
Preferred Qualifications:
- Research experience with ancient legal texts
- Familiarity with Church history and epigraphy
- Motivation to work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary setting
