Lecturer Position in Archaeology (Osteology) at Uppsala University, Visby – Apply by 1 September 2025

About the Position

Uppsala University’s Department of Archaeology and Ancient History invites applications for a full-time Associate Senior Lecturer in Archaeology with a Specialisation in Osteology, based at Campus Gotland in Visby, Sweden. This four-year, tenure-track position combines teaching and research, with a minimum of 50% research time dedicated to advancing the university’s cultural heritage focus. The successful candidate will work closely with a vibrant team of archaeologists and osteologists and will contribute to interdisciplinary teaching, field-based training, and laboratory methods. Applicants should have a doctoral degree in archaeology or related disciplines such as bioarchaeology, zooarchaeology, or historical osteology, awarded within the last five years. A strong profile in areas like animal osteology, cremated remains, or aDNA/isotope research is especially welcome. Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in archaeology, osteology, bioarchaeology, or related field
  • Degree awarded within five years of the application deadline
  • Demonstrated pedagogical competence (min. 5 weeks of teaching training)
  • Proven ability to teach in English and Swedish (or willingness to learn Swedish within two years)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Specialisation in animal osteology, cremated remains, palaeopathology
  • Skills in GIS, digitisation, or linked open data
  • Strong publication record and success in research funding
  • Experience in collaborative research and community outreach
  • Capacity for interdisciplinary and student-active teaching

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent and collaborative research in osteology
  • Deliver undergraduate and master’s level teaching (up to 50%)
  • Develop and coordinate courses, including fieldwork and labs
  • Apply for external research funding
  • Supervise students and contribute to doctoral recruitment
